Bernard of Chartres

Bernard of Chartres
(d. c. 1130)
   Theologian.
Bernard was the elder brother of thierry of chartres and was born in Brittany. Little is known of his life except that he was Chancellor of the School of Chartres from 1119 until at least 1124 and that gilbert de la porrée was among his pupils. None of his writings have survived, but John of salisbury describes him as an influential teacher, one who oversaw the morals as well as the intellects of his students, and as ‘the most thorough-going Platonist of our age’. Partly as a result of his leadership, the School of Chartres was known for its Platonist traditions.
